Melbourne Airport (MEL)

Melbourne Airport (MEL) has four terminals, all inside one precinct and within walking distance of each other. T2 is the international terminal, and T1, T3 and T4 are the domestic ones. The SkyBus runs to the city all night, the taxi ranks are outside T1, T2 and the Transport Hub, and the public transport leaves from Terminal 4.

The terminals at Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport has four terminals, all under one roof:

  • T1 is a domestic terminal, and Qantas uses it.
  • T2 is the international terminal.
  • T3 is a domestic terminal, and Virgin Australia uses it.
  • T4 is a domestic terminal, and Jetstar and Rex use it.

The terminals are inside the same precinct, so an international flight connects to a domestic one on foot, but if you arrive from abroad you have to collect your bag and clear customs before you go to a domestic terminal.

Getting to and from Melbourne Airport

The SkyBus is the way into the city: the City Express runs to Southern Cross Station in the centre, the trip takes about half an hour to three quarters of an hour, and the bus leaves from the terminal. The taxi ranks are on the ground floor outside T1 and T2 and at the Transport Hub, and the public transport and the regional buses leave from the Transport Hub at Terminal 4.

What happens when you arrive at MEL

Keep your passport and any form you filled in on the plane with you the whole way, from the aircraft door to the exit, and check the terminal on your ticket before you travel.

Melbourne Airport with children

All four terminals are in one precinct, so a family does not have to take a bus between them, but the walk from the international terminal to the domestic ones is long enough to want a seat and a drink on the way. The SkyBus drops off and picks up at the terminal, and a snack and water are worth keeping within reach.

Plan your stop at Melbourne Airport

Terminals, airlines and arrival procedures change, so check with the airline and the airport's own site before you travel. And check with the embassy or consulate about the documents your family needs for the entry rules of every country on your route.
