Montreal Airport (YUL)

Montreal Airport (YUL) is one terminal on two levels, with the departures upstairs and the arrivals downstairs. After the security it splits into the domestic zone, the international zone and the transborder one for the United States. The 747 bus runs to downtown all day and all night, and the play areas are in every zone.

The terminals at Montreal Airport

Montreal-Trudeau International Airport has one passenger terminal on two levels: the upper level for the departures, with the check-in counters, the security and the shops, and the lower level for the arrivals, with the baggage claim, the customs and the transport. After the security the terminal splits into three zones: the domestic one for the flights inside Canada, the international one for the rest of the world, and the transborder one for the United States, which is not joined to the other two inside the terminal.

The domestic zone has the gates 1 to 49, with the gates 17 to 34 across the pedestrian tunnel from the main hall, the international zone has the gates 50 to 68 and the transborder zone has the gates 72 to 89. The domestic and the international zones share the security checkpoint A, and the transborder zone has its own checkpoint C. The airport serves about 150 destinations in 46 countries.

Getting to and from Montreal Airport

The 747 bus of the Société de transport de Montréal runs the seven days of the week and the 24 hours of the day between the airport and downtown Montreal, with a route to the Lionel-Groulx metro station. The REM line reaches the airport too, with the bus 815 that joins the REM Des Sources station with the terminal. The fare booth and the ticket machines are on the international arrivals level.

The free shuttle of the airport goes from Door 8 on the departures level to the VIA Rail station of Dorval. The taxis have their dispatcher at Door 23, the ride share picks up at Door 28 and the limousines at Door 24, all on the arrivals level, and the car rental offices are open from 7 in the morning to 10 at night.

What happens when you arrive at YUL

Keep your passport and any form you filled in on the plane with you the whole way, from the aircraft door to the exit.

The airport's own site publishes the hours of the security checkpoints, the YUL Express lane and the wait at each one, so you can read them before you travel. The Marriott hotel is inside the terminal, and it is joined to it and to the pier of the United States.

Montreal Airport with children

Most of the boarding lounges of the terminal have a play area: one near the gate 11 and another near the gate 5 in the domestic zone, two in the international zone, near the gates 53 and 68, and one near the gate 86 in the transborder zone.

The nursing rooms are next to most of the toilets, with a sink, a chair, a changing table and, in many of them, a microwave. The airport lends strollers free for children from six months old, in the gates 1, 52, 57, 75 and 78 when you leave, and in the gates 17A, 53, 62 and 85 when you arrive. And the families with a baby or a small child have priority at the security checkpoints A and C.

Plan your stop at Montreal Airport

The airport's own site says the airlines and the destinations change, so check your flight on the flights page before you travel. And check with the embassy or consulate about the documents your family needs for the entry rules of every country on your route.
