The National Palace in the morning

Start in Zona 1, the historic centre, at the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, at 6ta calle and 6ta avenida. The Ministry of Culture and Sports presents it as the symbol of the city and of the country. The palace opens from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 16:00, and for now it does not open on Saturdays or Sundays. Its guided tours are in Spanish and are subject to the official events of the palace.

The Fuente Luminosa, in the Plaza de la Constitución, was built with the same materials as the palace and opened on 15 March 1944. The Catedral Metropolitana is at 7a avenida 6-73, also in Zona 1, and its first stone was laid on 25 July 1782.

Zona 13 in the afternoon: the museums and the zoo

The Zoológico La Aurora says it is 30 minutes by car from the centre in Zona 1 and 20 minutes on foot from the airport, so a family with an evening flight ends the day close to it.

The Museo de los Niños is at 5ta calle 10-00, on the Calle de los Museos, and its three galleries, Mi País, Ciencia and Salud, teach through games and interactive activities.

The zoo is in the Finca La Aurora, and among its areas is La Granjita, where visitors can meet farm animals up close. The Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología is in the same Finca La Aurora, and since the zoo closes at 4 pm, start the afternoon there.

Plan your one day in Guatemala City

Only from Tuesday to Friday are the palace, the two museums and the zoo all open on the same day: the palace opens on weekdays, and the Museo de los Niños, the zoo and the archaeology museum close on Mondays, the zoo for park maintenance. On special dates the zoo opens as well, and it posts those hours and dates on its social networks.

The hours change from one place to the next, so check them before you go. The Museo de los Niños opens from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm from Tuesday to Friday, and from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The zoo opens from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 4 pm, and the archaeology museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday too, at hours best confirmed with the museum.
