One day in Orlando, United States

One day in Orlando means one big attraction: the Kennedy Space Center, east of the city on Merritt Island, or one theme park, zoo or water park. End with a walk around Lake Eola before dinner, with the wild swans on the water.

One big attraction: the space centre, a theme park or the water

Choose the one thing the day is about. The Kennedy Space Center, east of Orlando, is the first choice, and the visitor complex is open from 9 am to 5 pm, so it fills a morning and most of the day after it. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

The Rocket Garden and the space shuttle on display are what most visitors remember, and the buses that run past the launch pads are the part children ask about. The launch schedule is published on the centre's own site, so it is worth checking what is going up that week. The theme parks are the other choice, and they fill a day just as well: Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios, EPCOT and Magic Kingdom each open for the day, and Disney's Blizzard Beach, the water park built around the tale of a ski resort that melted into warm water, is the other choice when the weather is hot.

The afternoon: a park, a zoo or the water

Pick the one that suits the family and leave the rest for another day. The Animal Kingdom, for instance, lists 58 things to do, with the animal encounters, the Kilimanjaro Safaris and the rides of the park.

In the cooler months, a garden or a short boat trip works too. Winter Park has its chain of lakes, and the City runs parks on the lakes: Lake Baldwin Park, Dinky Dock Park with its fishing pier, and Phelps Park, with playground equipment, basketball courts and tennis courts.

Lake Eola at the end of the day

Finish downtown, at Lake Eola Park, with a paved sidewalk that circles the lake for 0.9 miles, the Walt Disney Amphitheater for whatever is on, and the swan-shaped pedal boats the City rents on the water. The boats run from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 7 pm, and are closed on Mondays. The wild swans still come to visit the lake, the first of them arriving in 1922.

Plan your one day in Orlando

The theme parks take a whole day each, and the roads are wide and easy to drive, so one park is the right number.

Opening days and hours differ from park to park, and the space centre and the parks publish their own times, so check them before you travel. The summer is hot with a storm most afternoons, so the morning is the part to fill.

Frequently asked questions

What can a family do in one day in Orlando?

The Kennedy Space Center in the morning, one theme park, a zoo or a water park in the afternoon, and a walk around Lake Eola in the evening. The space centre is open from 9 am to 5 pm, so it goes first.

What is there to do at Lake Eola Park?

A paved sidewalk that circles the lake for 0.9 miles, the Walt Disney Amphitheater, and the swan-shaped pedal boats the City rents, which run from Tuesday to Sunday and are closed on Mondays. The wild swans come to visit the lake too. It is the easy end of the day, downtown.

How do you get to Kennedy Space Center from Orlando?

By road: from Orlando, take State Road 528 east and follow the signs to the Kennedy Space Center. The visitor complex opens at 9 am, and the last bus tour leaves two and a half hours before it closes.

Do I need a car in Orlando?

Not for the parks: the roads are wide. It helps when the day takes in a park and the space centre, or a town like Winter Park.
