The National Palace in the morning
The National Palace is in the heart of the historic district of San Salvador. It was built between 1905 and 1911 and served for years as the headquarters of the three branches of the government. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am, so it is closed on Mondays.
Visitors walk through the halls, and the four main ones are on the second level: the Pink Hall, where the Supreme Court of Justice sat; the Yellow Hall, which hosted the President of the Republic; the Blue Hall, which was the seat of the Legislative Assembly; and the Red Hall, which was used for the credential ceremony of ambassadors.
The Balboa park at midday
The Balboa Natural Park is minutes from the city, and it is part of one of the country's main ecological reserves. It covers thirty hectares of vegetation, and its monuments of the Rain Goddess, the God of Spells and the God of Fire have pre-Columbian details.
There is a hedge maze, a castle, fair rides for children, picnic areas, basketball courts and a soccer field, and the picnic area stays open until 10 pm. The park takes pedestrians from 6 am to 9 pm.
The El Boquerón park in the afternoon
The El Boquerón National Park is open from Monday to Sunday, from 8 am to 5 pm.
The park is at the top of the San Salvador volcano. It has marked trails, and the walk to the crater takes 20 to 25 minutes.
Plan your one day in San Salvador
Start with the palace in the morning, then Balboa at midday and El Boquerón in the afternoon: the palace visit is indoors, Balboa has its trees and its picnic areas, and El Boquerón closes at five.
The hours of the parks, the museums and the archaeological sites change, and the official tourism site publishes them, so it is worth checking them before you travel.
