The Museum of Natural Science in the morning

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is at 5555 Hermann Park Dr. From Monday to Thursday it opens at 9 am and closes at 5 pm, with the last entry at 4:30 pm, and from Friday to Sunday it opens at 9 am and closes at 6 pm, with the last entry at 5:30 pm. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and its hours may be longer on holidays and in summer, so check them before you go. On 24 October 2026 it closes at 5 pm, and for now the Cullen Hall of Gems & Minerals and the Brown Hall of Entomology are closed.

The average visit takes two hours or more. The Cockrell Butterfly Center, the Burke Baker Planetarium and the Giant Screen Theatre are special attractions with their own hours: they open at 10 am, but the Butterfly Center opens at noon on Mondays. General admission is free on Tuesdays from 5 to 8 pm, first come, first served, with the last entry at 7:30 pm.

The Houston Zoo at midday

The Houston Zoo is at 6200 Hermann Park Drive, and it is open 7 days a week. The daytime hours run from 9 am to 5 pm, with the last entry at 4 pm, and from 11 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 they run from 9 am to 4 pm, with the last entry at 3 pm.

Online reservations for timed tickets are required for every visitor who is not a member. The zoo is closed all day on Christmas Eve (24 December) and closed for daytime admission on Thanksgiving Day (26 November) and Christmas Day (25 December). On 7 November 2026 it closes at 3 pm, with the last entry at 2 pm, and on 13 November 2026 at 2 pm, with the last entry at 1 pm. Families can rent strollers, scooters, wheelchairs and wagons to get around the zoo.

The Miller Outdoor Theatre on show days

The Miller Outdoor Theatre is at 6000 Hermann Park Drive, and every performance of its eight-month season is free and family-friendly. Its daytime shows for children start at 11 am on the weekdays its calendar lists, and the last one on its list is on 3 November 2026.

There are covered seats, and the hill is a sloping lawn where families sit on a blanket or a lawn chair. After 3 November, check the theatre's calendar for its next daytime shows.

Plan your one day in Houston

The museum, the zoo and the theatre are all in Hermann Park, so there is no need to cross the city. The order of the day depends on the day of the week, because the museum's hours and the theatre's daytime shows change from day to day. From 11 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, the zoo closes an hour earlier.
