One day in New York, United States

One day in New York is a walk, not a plan. Start at the Museum of Natural History in the morning, cross Central Park on foot, take the ferry to the island of Liberty, and end in a neighbourhood for dinner. The subway and the ferries reach every stop of the day.

The museum and Central Park in the morning

Start at the American Museum of Natural History. It is open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm, and it is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The dinosaur halls and the blue whale are the ones children remember, and the whole museum is easy to fill with a morning.

The museum is on the west side of Central Park, so the park is the next stop on foot. It covers 843 acres, with nearly 50 fountains, monuments and sculptures, 36 bridges and arches, and 21 playgrounds, so there is room for the children to run while the adults walk.

Belvedere Castle, at 79th Street and on top of the second highest natural point in the park, is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, and it is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The building holds a weather station. The Reservoir, between 86th and 96th Streets, is the park's largest body of water and one of its most popular places for running.

Lunch in New York

The options along the park's southern side are the quickest stop: a slice of pizza from a counter, or a bagel with cream cheese, eaten on the benches with the traffic going by. It is the same food the city is known for, and it is the fastest.

The harbour and the island of Liberty

Take a ferry from the Battery in Lower Manhattan to the island of Liberty. The ticket includes the grounds and the museums on both Liberty Island and Ellis Island.

On Liberty Island the museum has interactive exhibits and the original torch, and the green roof is a viewing platform. On Ellis Island the immigration museum, which is called the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, is where the records of the millions of people who arrived through this harbour are kept.

The neighbourhoods in the evening

End the day with a walk in a neighbourhood: the brownstones of Brooklyn Heights with the view of the skyline from Brooklyn Bridge Park, or the tree-lined streets of the Upper West Side, where the Museum of Natural History and the park are both a short walk away.

Plan your one day in New York

The subway reaches every stop of the day and runs around the clock, so the plan is a place and a time rather than a ticket. The ferries need a place in the queue, and the museum is the one that closes earliest, so it goes first.

Museums and attractions change their hours, so check each one before you travel. In winter the light comes early, which is a good reason to do the ferry late and the park in the morning.
